Mary McGill

MMG Pic for WABMary McGill is Hardiman doctoral scholar at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). Her research explores young women’s engagement with selfie culture from a feminist cultural studies perspective. Areas of particular interest to her are visual culture, femininities, and postfeminist digital cultures. Mary lectures in feminist and gender theory at the Centre for Global Women’s Studies in NUIG. She is also a board member and communications officer with Sibéal, Ireland and Northern Ireland’s only research network for postgrads and early career researchers in the fields of feminism and gender. Outside of academia, she is a regular media contributor and writer with a particular emphasis on women’s rights, popular culture, and feminist histories. Her work has appeared in a range of print and digital titles. She is a regular contributor to RTÉ Radio One’s nightly arts show, Arena. You can watch her TEDx Talk on the selfie phenomenon here.
