Amanda Ocasio

grad 1Amanda Ocasio is a graduate student in Journalism at Hofstra University. She is turning to journalism after two degrees in History (BA ’09—University at Buffalo, MA ’13—Brooklyn College) where she focused on assorted issues related to gender and conflict in Russia and South Asia.

In early 2014, she tied everything together in a conference talk she gave at the MAR/AAS annual conference, where she highlighted some flaws in earlier scholarship on the origins of modern terrorism.  Using analysis of both primary and secondary sources, she made the argument that Russia provided the “revolutionary model” followed by militant Sri Lankan Tamil nationalists.

As a “side project” during her first Masters degree, she also provided minor assistance with the Trans Bodies, Trans Selves book project—helping with social media and project surveys.  Ocasio is also an editor at Queens Free Press—a community newspaper and activist outlet based in Queens, NY.
